To the Virgins, to Make Much Happier Sunday
Nothing is more divine than being ourselves. You need not be like Jesus, Buddha, Khrisna, Mohammed or anybody. Any idea of idolatry is perverted.
If God wanted another Buddha to exist in the world, he must have created another Buddha. Creating a million Buddhas must be very easy for him. But instead of creating a million Buddhas, he has created you.
He has loved you so much that he has created you, yet you hate yourself and long to be somebody else. If there was something such as blasphemy against God, hating yourself would be the worst.
I have heard a story. Carl had a coffee break with Jesus. After sipping his coffee, he bragged, “My stance on it is this, Jesus: love the sinner, hate the sin.”
Jesus took his cup and replied, “I’ll do you one better, Carl: love the sinner, hate your own sin.”
You may hate your own sin. You may pluck your eyes for causing you to sin — for the Bible has told you so. But how would this help you to love yourself?
Instead of loving yourself, you have hated your eyes, which are the parts of you. You have blamed your body. And before long, you will have nothing left to blame but yourself.
So you hate yourself for not being good enough, for being such a flawed person, for being a sinner. And because you hate yourself, you are bound to hate other people too.
Now this is something. You have been created out of love, by God — the love itself. And yet, you hate.
Nelson Mandela was right when he said people must learn to hate because no one is born hating another person. Hate is unnatural. And if people can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than hatred.
But truly, true love need not be taught. It’s not only coming naturally to your heart. It is the very nature of your heart. To love is natural, to hate is unnatural. But you have been living so unnaturally that you forget your own nature.
You may have tried to remember it by borrowing many ideas about love. You may borrow from the Bible. So your love may be patient, your love may be kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud — it is not bad at all, but it is not true. It is only something you borrowed.
Right now, the love you have known is just the other side of hate. Your love and hate are two sides of the same coin. So when you love someone, hate follows as shadow — it can turn to hate anytime. And when you hate, it can turn to love anytime.
True love is totally different than that. It has no opposite. There is no such thing as true hate, because hate cannot be true. It must be false.
True love need not be taught because you cannot learn it. You cannot earn it. It is beyond your efforts. It’s not a seed you have to sow. It’s a flower you may let grow. It is the nature of your heart. All you can do is relax. More than that is not needed.
If you’re such a lazy person, it will be very easy. If you are not, it will take some time because you are so tense. You may try to relax, but the more you try, the more you’ll be tense. Unless you realize how futile is trying, you can never be relaxed. Try it.
It’s only when you give up trying, the flower starts growing by itself. And when it grows, you are in tune with your forgotten nature, your forgotten self. For the first time in your life, you will be utterly helpless. Useless.
All this time you have always been somebody. Being a wife, a husband, a mother, a father, a boss, an employee, you are always useful. Now that you are nobody but yourself, you are useless. Nobody can exploit you. Your freedom is total.
You are no longer a Christian, a Buddhist, a Hindu, a Mohammedan, not anybody. Just a pure being — bare, naked, not going anywhere. No heaven, no hell, no God, nothing. Everything has disappeared, and you have to start afresh. You have to be reborn.
Jesus was not wrong when he said to Nicodemus that someone must be born again to see the kingdom of God. It is not a world full of Christians. There will be no church, not a single church. Not a single temple either. Or mosque. It’s more like Lennon’s song: Imagine — there’s no countries.. and no religion too..
Lennon said, it’s easy if you try. In fact, it’s easier if you don’t. Don’t try at all. Just imagine.
Of course, Jesus will be there. Buddha will be there. Khrisna will be there. Mohammed will be there. Lennon will be there. Any colorful and beautiful persons the world has known will be there — because they have been just themselves. They have been reborn.
They have let their flowers grow to the peak and bloom, contributing their fragrances to the world — they have done their part, and now it’s your turn.
